Life got in the way, I stopped blogging, became a mom, focused on other things but now creativity is getting me through a rough patch in life, as if life weren't rough enough for all of us with the COVID. So inspiration struck for me to write how I'm coping or surviving without being able to see the live show until maybe Summer or Fall of 2021.</p><p>First I'd like to shout out to the people I would consider a distance phans. Distance phans are phans who don't live close enough to see the show in NY, London or anywhere on tour it may be playing. I find myself wondering how the distance phans cope until they can get to NY or another location to see the show. </p><p>Since Broadway has been shutdown a bunch of us have suffered. My suffering of not being able to see my favorite show live pales in comparison to the suffering of those who work in the arts and have now found themselves on unemployment or back to temp jobs until they can work in theatres, concert halls and other live venues again. </p><p>So my PHriends how are you coping with this? What are you doing to feel connected to our favorite story while you aren't able to see the live show? </p><p>I have been listening to the music here and there, pining away for the live production. This is the year my son is 4 and I would have been able to take him to see the show and hoped he would sit still for it. I always wondered how it would be to take my child to phantom before I had a kid and now I've got to wait until he's possibly 5 to see how he may like it, if he'll love it as much as I do, think I'm weird for loving it or hate it. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-W4uP1lYiGC0/X8EY0oj-39I/AAAAAAACu4c/jXodOvQHgPYiWWlBDvXFSw3EipAV2Wg1gCPcBGAsYHg/s1080/FB_IMG_1605909903983.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="864" data-original-width="1080" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-W4uP1lYiGC0/X8EY0oj-39I/AAAAAAACu4c/jXodOvQHgPYiWWlBDvXFSw3EipAV2Wg1gCPcBGAsYHg/s320/FB_IMG_1605909903983.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4y4nA8ZAoJI/X8EY0tGFPfI/AAAAAAACu4c/xjlCjK9mb0suA-4JGqiU4dxI7SzlaSULACPcBGAsYHg/s1080/FB_IMG_1605909911754.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="864" data-original-width="1080" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4y4nA8ZAoJI/X8EY0tGFPfI/AAAAAAACu4c/xjlCjK9mb0suA-4JGqiU4dxI7SzlaSULACPcBGAsYHg/s320/FB_IMG_1605909911754.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My 4 year old and myself from a recent Christmas photo shoot I did! I doubt he'll stay still for the show but he might surprise me! <br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p></p><p>I've always wanted tattoos for a good long time but now that tattoo shops have reopened and will hopefully not shut down again, I've been using tattoos to cope with missing my phantom as well. Obsessing over them, thinking of which ones I'll get next and if I want to follow certain themes or just let the designs of many small tattoos fall into place. I am devoting my whole back to phantom of the opera. The artist working on my back is doing the black and white ballet scene for me where the phantom's shadow hangs over the ballerina dancers right before Bouquet's body drops. She'll be doing one more piece combining the curtains, the chandelier and a note from the phantom to fill in extra back space after this scene is finished. One of my artist (because I am currently dealing with 3) is making mini characters his signature and he tattooed the 1925 Lon Chaney phantom on my back in his style and the 1925 red death phantom on my chest area right next to a heart tattoo he had previously done in March before the shutdown. At least I'll have some new phantom of the opera tattoos to show the cast members should I be able to get backstage for free again once the show resumes. </p><p>I'm going through some personal stuff as well, I don't really want to explain about it in what's going to be a really long blog, but I could definitely use seeing the show right now so it makes me miss it even more. So I've gone to creative outlets I gave up long ago, (drawing and now blogging and maybe writing again), showing off some OOTDs on social media and music to calm me down and ease my worries a little over this situation. </p><p>So this is how I'm trying to cope without live phantom. My Phan PHriends and non Phan friends who are missing the arts whether it's actual gallery shows, visits to the museums (which I think we are able to do now), concerts, Broadway shows let's all hang in there, try our best to be there for each other and cope the best we can without these things we love in life that give us a little sense of completion. As sad as it is, it's comforting to know we at least know how we'll feel and what we'll do when the show is off Broadway :(</p>Diana Brewsterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04438682392631832652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2446625229517785127.post-87110577311951170152018-04-09T07:51:00.000-07:002018-04-09T07:51:03.294-07:00POTO #70 NotesWow! I can't believe I haven't written in or updated this blog since before my son was born. Fast forward 2 years later and my phantom attendance has been lacking due to mommyhood. Life of a mom phan. I missed the 30th anniversary milestone & celebration performances but I finally got to look over a busy calendar, clear it with my husband that he could watch the kiddo (since he's not old enough to go to the show with me yet) and grab a ticket for this past Saturday April 7, 2018. I attended the matinee I don't plan on going back to night performances until my son and a second kid (if hubby and I have a second kid) are over 3.<br />
<br />
I was super excited to see Laird Mackintosh as the phantom! I've heard awesome things about him and he didn't disappoint. His voice was amazing, it had just the right haunting tone when he had to be haunting. His final scene portrayal was excellent. He had me crying, and you could hear the hurt in his voice as he sang to Christine about his life with disfigurement.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Playbill hand selfie shot stole the idea from another phan named Rachel. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I was really happy Kayley Ann Voorhes was back in the role of the alternate Christine. She is a phenomenal Christine I've seen her a few times. My brother thought she was easy on the eyes as well when we met her backstage a few years ago before a performance. Between her and Laird they nailed the final scene. I'm not sure if I'll get to see Ali Ewoldt in the show before she leaves unless she's Christine for quite a few years or comes back again after she leaves.<br />
<br />
Racquel Suarez Groen was an awesome Carlotta. I loved Michele McConnell before she left, but Racquel bought new nuances to the role that I truly appreciated. She played up the prima donna attitude of Carlotta quite well without overdoing it. She added an interesting vocal warm up bit during the Il Muto scene which I'm not sure I've seen done before but it was great!<br />
<br />
After an awesome show I had no time for the stage door I was eager to get back home to my son and I live in Suffolk County so it's at least an hour train ride back and that's only if I grab an express train. When my son and another possible second kid are older I'll stage door again. To my luck it's April one of two months Broadway raises money for Broadway Cares and I got to meet Maree Johnson when she was in the hallway collecting money for Broadway Cares. I think I'll plan to go in April so I can at least meet one cast member. After meeting Maree quickly this happy mama headed home until the next phantom phix which will probably be sometime in the Summer or Winter! <br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Since mommy has no time for stage dooring at the moment I was happy to grab a quick selfie and meet Maree Johnson when some cast members were out after the show collecting money for Broadway Cares Charity. I think I'll go to the show every April as part of my twice a year so I can meet at least one cast member without stage dooring. </td></tr>

I stopped reviewing every single NYC Broadway performance I go to, especially since many times that I do attend the show I see the same cast members and it makes no sense to point out my likes of various cast members over and over again. However since I haven't written a new entry in quite some time I decided to write some notes on the 65th performance I attended in NYC on February 11, 2016 at 2 pm.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tWZ3q2iBsOc/VsNuKz_NhrI/AAAAAAAByXw/wjpbNjEf7ew/s1600/20160211_133923.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tWZ3q2iBsOc/VsNuKz_NhrI/AAAAAAAByXw/wjpbNjEf7ew/s320/20160211_133923.jpg" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">All by my lonesome in the front row with tickets to performance #66</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
I sat in the front row in a partial view seat off to the side of the stage. Sadly unless I want to pay top dollar or win a $28 ticket in the theatre's new lottery policy for front row partial view seats this may have been the last time I will have gotten to sit in the front row because they aren't selling front row partial view tickets anymore. When I have a chance to sit in the first few rows I do enjoy the performance because I notice a lot more detail with the actor's facial expressions when they perform. I tend to miss those details when I sit in rear mezz but I do gladly sit in rear mezz seats if it means being able to see phantom one more time on the cheap.<br />
<br />
So the two cast members I have notes on is James Barbour (the current phantom) and Craig Bennett (who's recently taken on the role of Monsieur Firmin). I've seen Craig Bennett a few times but have not gotten to comment on the great job he does as one of the Opera House managers. He performs very well with Laird Mackintosh and they are a dynamic duo when they play the managers.<br />
<br />
James Barbour has grown into the role of phantom. He's been great since I first saw him but he's gotten even better and he managed to have me in tears at the end of the show this past performance and the performance I saw before this on January 29. I pretty much cry every time I see the show but sometimes I cry a lot more at the end especially if the role of the phantom is played well.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Z3B8TU5EbiQ/VsNulhJ-vwI/AAAAAAAByX4/s7H35GvUSjc/s1600/20160211_162453.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Z3B8TU5EbiQ/VsNulhJ-vwI/AAAAAAAByX4/s7H35GvUSjc/s320/20160211_162453.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">One of four curtain call photos I took before I got told to stop taking pictures. I don't understand why curtain call photos after the show aren't allowed. The show is over it's not like I'm taking shots during the performance. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
I don't like to comment on any cast members that I don't think perform their roles well so if I have any feelings about a cast member not being up to par I leave it out of my entries and just discuss it privately with other phans.<br />
<br />
I didn't stage door with this performance I'm hoping to stage door before the show when I attend the next performance.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gt6aWw8JT3Q/VsNvAe7ikXI/AAAAAAAByYA/uF0_chNhE2o/s1600/20160211_162907.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gt6aWw8JT3Q/VsNvAe7ikXI/AAAAAAAByYA/uF0_chNhE2o/s320/20160211_162907.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I love these ornate gold painted masks on the theatre doors! </td></tr>

<br />
Overall my most recent performance was pretty spectacular, I'm grateful I got to see the show for a 65th time and am looking forward to performance #66 on March 26, 2016!Diana Brewsterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04438682392631832652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2446625229517785127.post-52155895500804707272015-07-07T12:39:00.001-07:002015-07-07T12:39:23.866-07:00Phantom of the Opera #62 NOTESI stopped writing notes for every performance I see, especially if I happen to be seeing the same actors or happen to see two performances fairly close together. That being said, since I really haven't updated this blog with an entry in a long time I decided to write notes on the 62nd performance I've seen which I saw on July 3, 2015 at 8 PM.<br />
<br />
First I want to thank my sisters, my brother and my brother-in-law (who was dragged to the show by my sister) for coming to the show with me and buying my ticket. You guys honored my birthday wish of attending phantom with all my siblings at one time and I appreciate it!<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sadly I didn't get to take this photo it's not mine just using it for the blog</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
My first note is about Kaley Ann Voorhes. I've had the privilege of actually meeting her a few times before I finally got to see her. I didn't think I would ever get to see her actually because I usually can't get to the show during the time slots she performs as alternate Christine. But lucky for me she was in the show on Friday instead of Julia Udine. I loved her performance. She really came through during the final lair scene and the second notes scene with the managers in Act II of the show. Not only is her performance awesome but she is one of the sweetest actresses I met, she really appreciates all of her phans and I hope when she is done with phantom in August that she goes far in the acting world whether it's Broadway or on film.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This is when I met Kaley in September of '14 before I saw her as Christine. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
My second note is about James Barbour. I have seen him once before but by the time I was ready to write about seeing him the performance wasn't so fresh in my mind anymore. I really like his phantom, I like Norm Lewis a little better but I really felt deep emotion with the performance I recently saw from James. So much so that I was sobbing so hard by the end of the performance. Most of the time I do cry when I see the show even though I know what happens and how it ends. I definitely love the emotion that he brings to Erik's character. <div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Uo5jgiPw3oY/VZwqhpIxFPI/AAAAAAABp_Q/rJEl7CR1CmQ/s1600/tumblr_nm733810r01uqy915o1_1280.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Uo5jgiPw3oY/VZwqhpIxFPI/AAAAAAABp_Q/rJEl7CR1CmQ/s320/tumblr_nm733810r01uqy915o1_1280.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This is not my photo either! I don't want to take credit for work that's not mine. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />That's about it for notes from my most recent viewing of phantom. If you can go see Kaley before she leaves the show!<br /><div>

This is a great book if you're seriously into the 1925 Phantom of the Opera. This book provides a ton of details about the 1925 making of the film, the film stars, and the versions of the film that exist. There's a ton of special reprinted photos, scripts and publicity within this book too so not only can you learn about the film but you can own reprints of paper materials that have to do with the 1925 version of phantom. I couldn't put this down until I finished it, it's a recommended read for phans and phans of the 1925 film! </div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Some of the best phan phiction out there!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />So I've been on a phantom of the opera book reading kick lately which means I'm gobbling up words in phan phiction with my eyes as quickly as I can and going through the rest of the books in my phantom collection that I haven't read yet and finally getting around to review them/blog them. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I finally finished this captivating book during the recent blizzard NY was hit with. Rodriguez currently has three volumes of short stories having to do with phantom of the opera that she titled manifestations of a phantom's soul. I read vol. II when I got it for Christmas and I just got around to reading this one. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I love all the phantom stories in this novel. Some of them seemed slightly familiar and I wondered if she had included some of the stories I read here in Vol. II. I was too lazy to verify this because I didn't want to dig around for Vol. II which I already put away in the garage after reading. There's not enough room in my place to keep my phantom novels out after I read them so they need to be boxed up in the garage for storage sadly. Most of her stories in this volume had Erik & Christine ending up together (which is always my preferential ending to the original story) and Raoul looking like a stupid ninny who won't leave the phantom and Christine alone. I love Rodriguez's writing and have actually read her other books besides Phantom. I don't understand why this woman isn't a bestselling author yet but for now she'll be my favorite Indie writer and if she ever gets to be a best selling author she'll be co-favorites with Lisa Scottoline IMO. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In short I have nothing but accolades for this volume and suggest you purchase it if you can or get it on loan from a trusting phan to read ASAP! </div>
<div>

It's been awhile since I've reviewed a Phantom of the Opera performance or a book. I want to be more active with this blog again so here goes!<br />
<br />
On January 14, 2015 my friend Janell and I had the luck to once again visit the Majestic Theatre to see another performance of Phantom of the Opera! My 59th time, her 4th time!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wv_YxxGOQCk/VLg76WPtJKI/AAAAAAABld4/SkqyqU3ND6g/s1600/IMG_0031.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wv_YxxGOQCk/VLg76WPtJKI/AAAAAAABld4/SkqyqU3ND6g/s1600/IMG_0031.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Janell and I eagerly awaiting the show, happy to be seeing it again! </td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
So here's some brief notes about this performance!<br />
<br />
Norm Lewis- It was my third time seeing Norm in the role of the Phantom! I love his phantom! I love the deeper voice he gives to the character, I love his final lair scene. I could see this man in the role again and again but I think last night is definitely going to be the last time I got to see him in the role.<br />
<br />
Julia Udine - Julia Udine is the new Christine. She replaced Mary Michael Patterson. So in my opinion she started out weaker and got a lot stronger towards the end of the show. But I'm thinking she might have done that on purpose to show the character progression of Christine because I've seen other Christines approach the role in the same way.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BbVGxIQ99Zo/VLg7vWcChxI/AAAAAAABlcU/Ok3Z2ABbJok/s1600/IMG_0017.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BbVGxIQ99Zo/VLg7vWcChxI/AAAAAAABlcU/Ok3Z2ABbJok/s1600/IMG_0017.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Julia Udine and myself before the show started! </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Linda Balgord - Linda Balgord is the new Mme. Giry on Broadway. I thought she was okay. Her voice gave the right Mme. Giry tone, but she looked like a fairy godmother version of Mme. Giry instead of the wise foreboding figure that lurks about the Paris Opera House giving a tiny bit of protection to the phantom.<br />
<br />
So those are my notes, and let me conclude any one of these actors would do a way better job than I would ever do if I had to walk across the Majestic Stage to be in the show!<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">One of two curtain call photos I snuck in before the usher yelled at me to stop taking pictures even though it was curtain call! </td></tr>

On February 9, 2015 James Barbour will take over the title role in the Phantom of the Opera! He will join new cast members Julia Udine (Christine) & Linda Balgord (Mme. Giry).<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Broadway's New Phantom!<br /><br /><a href="http://www.thephantomoftheopera.com/news/latest-news/the-phantom-of-the-opera-to-welcome-james-barbour-as-broadways-new-phantom">Welcome to the Cast James Barbour! </a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
There is however a scandal surrounding this actor that has caused a little bit of a sensation. According to Playbill, Barbour sexually touched a 15 year old fan after a performance of Jane Eyre in 2001 and again when she visited his apartment later that evening.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.playbill.com/news/article/james-barbour-sentenced-to-jail-term-and-probation-148059">The Scandal as reported by Playbill!</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Some phans don't welcome the news about this scandal. I myself am not sure what to think. This could have happened, it could have been consensual, and lots of girls look older than they are so he could have mistaken her for a 20 year old instead of a 15 year old. At the same time the girl could have lied to get some attention, yes some victims really are sexually assaulted and yes some girls lie about it to get attention or to ruin a man who has rejected their advances. So personally I'm on the fence. I was a little disgusted when I found out about the scandal, but objectively I don't know what to think. Feel free to share your thoughts or opinions about the matter in the comments of my blog entry. </div>

In Australia production is in the works for a new animated version of Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera!<br />

I would love a new animated phantom, so in addition to blogging about this, I'm also going to pledge some money as well :)Diana Brewsterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04438682392631832652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2446625229517785127.post-5565948532535462102014-03-17T12:43:00.003-07:002014-03-17T12:58:41.229-07:00Bayshore High School's production of Phantom of the Opera (Notes)On Thursday March 13, 2014, Friday March 14, 2014 and Saturday March 15, 2014, Bayshore High School in Bayshore, NY located on Long Island performed Phantom of the Opera. All performances started at 7 P.M. When I found out about the production, I had to go because Bayshore is very close to where I live. So I actually ended up getting my mother in law, my cousin, my aunt, my grandmother, a friend of mine and two of her family members to attend the production with me on Saturday night.<br />
<br />
I figure when that awful time hits Broadway and phantom closes down (let's hope NEVER!), that I'll have to get used to attending High School productions to get my fix, supplementing these mediocre performances with any bootlegs I can get my hands on, and the filmed concert of the 25th Anniversary production at Royal Albert Hall.<br />
<br />
<b>Before I give you my thoughts & notes about the actual show let me just say my acting is mediocre at best and my singing is awful, so even though I might post some criticisms, I'm pretty sure almost anyone could do a better job acting or singing POTO than me. </b><br />
<br />
For a High School production the set designs were actually pretty amazing. The chandelier was way better than Great Neck High School's Chandelier. (Great Neck is the only other High School production I've seen to date). I'm not sure if the students used any strobe lights but they managed a stage effect where the chandelier flickered or blinked the lights. The Phantom's lair and the AIAOY rooftop scene were the best sets IMO.<br />
<br />
The costumes were done pretty well too. Apparently one of the mother's hand sewed the costumes for the cast over 3 months time. She did a whiz bang job! The one costume piece that bothered me was Christine's wig in the beginning of the show. She ended up wearing a different wig for AIAOY and for the second act but during Hannibal, Think of Me and the title song she looked like she was wearing a rat's nest on her head.<br />
<br />
Masquerade was performed circa the 2004 film! The cast wore evening dresses and suits or tuxes for the men and they waved red fans around during different parts of the Masquerade choreography. I would have liked to have seen renditions of the Broadway costumes but given the fact that the costumes were single-handedly done by one of the cast member's mothers in 3 months time I could understand why they went in this direction for Masquerade.<br />
<br />
The principal cast had excellent voices. Lindsay Tierney seemed to have a mildly hard time with Carlotta, but Carlotta and Christine are very tough roles to sing. For a HS girl she did a good job. Asia Stewart was Christine, her voice seemed a little deep to me but she still pulled it off. Remson DeJoseph played the phantom. He did really well until the final lair scene. He made Erik more angry, I do not like violent angry Eriks. For me there has to be a balance during the final scene. He's very angry but he's also hurt, confused and slightly tender. He just didn't get that at the end. James Vaughn played Raoul and he upstaged Remson DeJoseph during the final lair scene. He was choking on the punjab lasso and while Christine kissed Erik, he was screaming very clearly "No! Christine you don't love him!" It was a weird call but I guess that's what he felt when he was playing the part.<br />
<br />
Overall this production had better sets, but Great Neck had better actors and singers. For a High School production both schools did really well. Phantom is very hard to perform on a High School level so mistakes are bound to happen. I've only seen one 17 year old who happens to be a friend of mine sing and nail the part of Christine to the T.Diana Brewsterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04438682392631832652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2446625229517785127.post-21775643708357674592014-01-28T09:03:00.001-08:002014-01-28T09:03:36.486-08:00Erik: Portrait of a living corpse<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Recently I purchased this movie for viewing and for my collection! Here's my thoughts/notes about it!<br />
<br />
I thought the cinematography was good, I liked how the director used older black and white cinematography and mixed it with modern cinematography as well. I also thought this lent more to a view of Erik's feelings. I felt like this movie was a mix of the 1925 lon chaney version and David Staller's 1990 version.<br />
<br />
As far as the acting goes I feel Christine was okay, Mme. Giry was excellent and Meg Giry left something to be desired. Erik is a good actor but his latex make up and mask could use a little more work. His voice is ghostly and less angelic, he's also a little more violent with a twist of humor when he performs a violent act.<br />
<br />
Raoul's very jerky looking and his character is actually quite comical.<br />
<br />
Overall for an independent film it's pretty good, funny at times, I'm guessing by the ending that the story continues and I would like to view the next production release of the continued story if it does indeed happen.Diana Brewsterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04438682392631832652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2446625229517785127.post-74692872151606011142014-01-28T08:30:00.001-08:002014-01-28T08:30:48.657-08:00Manifestations of a Phantom's soul volume 2 by Michelle Rodriguez<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This lovely work of Phan Phic was a Christmas gift to me from my dear friend Jessica. Even though I have lots of phantom books at home that I have yet to read I figured it was long overdue for a phantom reading and review blog entry. So I started reading!<br />
<br />
This book is wonderful. There's ten short stories, the stories are variations on the theme of Christine and Erik's love. Some stories are erotic, some have happy endings, some have extremely sad endings. I liked it because it wasn't the same old Erik & Christine happily ever after, each story had a different possibility.<br />
<br />
Michelle's work is worth the read I've already picked up one of her other non phantom novels and I intend to pick up more of her phan phiction to read in the future after I get through stuff in my personal collection that I have yet to read! Or re-read! I would re-read Michelle's work!Diana Brewsterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04438682392631832652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2446625229517785127.post-82004548656324208502013-12-06T13:53:00.001-08:002013-12-06T13:53:21.790-08:00Phantom of the Opera #52 NOTES<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

I thought on September 26 my performances of phantom were over for 2013, but I was wrong. My little brother wanted to take me for Christmas and in return for Christmas I'd treat him to dinner and drinks. Together we'd have a nice memory of the city at Christmas and seeing phantom and that would be our gifts to each other. I couldn't turn down phantom so off we went on December 3 for my 52nd time, possibly my brother's third time, and my fifth time this year! Can I re live 2013? I'd like to see phantom 5 times each year!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My brother and I in our seats, I look half crazed my brother has some swag!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />The main cast members were Hugh Panaro (the phantom), Jeremy Hays (Raoul), and Mary Michael Patterson (Christine). I was really excited to see Mary Michael Patterson because I haven't gotten to see her in the role of Christine yet. In comparison to Marni Raab I think her acting is better but I feel she lacked luster singing the very high notes. Our seats were up in rear mezz though, so it's possible the seating affected how I heard her sing. As I've said in prior entries I'm also not the best judge of singing/acting capabilities for cast members so I just say how I feel without giving an authoritative review. <div>

<br /></div>
<div>
My other note has to do with the actor who played the conductor during the Don Juan rehearsal. I am not sure who this actor was but during the rehearsal after Carlotta and Mme. Giry have their mini - tiff about Piangi's singing and if the phantom is possibly present at the rehearsal, this actor looked at the rehearsing cast and nervously said "so, so, so" before continuing. The whole audience laughed at that point, I don't recall seeing that done before during a performance and thought it was an excellent and humourous touch. </div>

<div>
Besides those two notes, my brother and I had a great time. I impressed him with my red scarf and extensive knowledge of the show's lines and Masquerade choreography...okay so maybe he wasn't impressed maybe he just shook his head in disbelief! After the show we bought some broadway cares memorabilia, my brother bought me the autographed cast poster, I bought a phantom aids pin and the carols for a cure CD. After the show I bought Matt more booze and we rode the train home remembering an awesome show and I drank a coffee in phantom's honor from my new phantom of the opera travel mug (which is a very cheap travel mug that's overly priced but I bought it anyway because it's a phantom travel mug!). </div>

This past Wednesday night on September 25, 2013 I had the luck of attending Phantom of the Opera for my 4th time this year (51st time in total) with my friend Jen. She had gotten a bunch of tickets at the Broadway Cares flea market including a voucher to see Phantom of the Opera this week. She had asked me at the flea market if I would be willing to take a ticket and I said I would if we can go on Wednesday night. I traded her dinner for the ticket. I'll feed someone giving me a phantom of the opera ticket anytime!<br />

Hugh Panaro made this performance amazing! He's back in the role of the Phantom right now. He did some new things I've never seen him do when he performed the role before, he blew Jen and I away with the new stuff he's come up with. Right after MOTN before Christine wakes up from her boat fainting and spending the night in the phantom's lair while Hugh is banging away at the organ he has a new head shake dance move. Adds a great touch to that part of the show. During the final lair scene he whispered "You try my patience," to Christine, which gave the scene a shuddering touch that took my breath away.<br />

Jeremy Hays needs to grow into the role of Raoul a little more and I'm sure he'll be just fine. Towards the beginning of his performance he seemed to just be reciting his lines but he's new in the role of Raoul so I'm willing to cut him some slack and say he'll definitely be better with a little more time.<br />

Once the show was over Jen and I stage-doored. I haven't gotten to a have a real stage door experience in awhile. When I tried stage-dooring the night before the 25th anniversary things were a mess because everyone wanted to meet Sierra Bogess. I didn't bother for the 25th anniversary and even though I wanted to stage door when Joback was in I didn't do it because the two friends Shawn and I met after the show really didn't want to do the stage door thing. Notable actors we met while at the stage door included Jeremy Hays and the very lovable Jeremy Stolle. Stolle is incredibly awesome he cares a lot about the phans and is so easy going with anyone he meets.<br />

So those are my notes for performance # 51. Go see Hugh, even if you've seen him before! My next mission is to hopefully see Mary Michael Patterson in the role of Christine. (I ended up missing Sam Hill unfortunately. I heard she was quite good.)<br />

Broadway held their 27th annual Broadway Cares Flea Market this past Sunday on September 22, 2013. Even though this flea market has been held for 27 years this is the first time I was able to check it out. I arrived at the Flea Market with a budget of $100 cash and I really didn't think I was going to get anything because I thought all the items for sale would be ridiculously expensive. I ended up getting quite a haul for my $100 cash budget.<br />

I walked toward the Majestic after that and ended up meeting some new PHan girl PHriends at the Phantom of the Opera table. The flea market was listed as being open 10 to 7 but some tables starting shutting down earlier than that. Some tips about the flea market, if you've never gone and plan to go next year. If you want your choice of all the items offered get to the flea market early, you'll pay top dollar but you'll have what you want. If you are a bargain hunter like me it's best to come later, sometime in the afternoon a lot of merch becomes marked down just to get it sold.<br />

During the month of August I learned about a phantom of the opera phan cruise being offered through World Yacht Marina in Manhattan. I wanted to go on it and be a part of it so Shawn agreed to buy us two tickets as a first anniversary wedding present to me. Can't argue with any presents that are Phantom related! (Especially when they were at my suggestion.)<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Boarding the boat! </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
The Phan cruise was arranged to be a two hour cruise sailing through Manhattan. The ad for the cruise promised (or at least I thought it promised) Phantom of the Opera music for two hours and a brunch. The cruise took place on September 15, 2013 leaving the world yacht marina from Pier 81. The weather was pretty nice that day, sunny and beautiful! Perfect for sailing a on a yacht. Boarding began at 11:30 and the cruise set sail at 12 PM.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Hanging out and pretending to be rich on the upper level of the yacht</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />We explored the boat, scrambling to the upper level to get away from everyone for a few minutes after we boarded. A few minutes later we entered the cabin of the ship, we gave our names and waited until our brunch table was ready. Once our names were called we were shown to our table, we ordered some coffee and OJ and got a plate of food each. Normally I do care about the food I'm eating and I yelp the restaurants I go to but my mind wasn't really on the food much more on the phantom aspect of the cruise. I wolfed down one plate because I was hungry and so was Shawn and than once my belly was filled up I focused more on the cruise and phantom part of the trip.<br />

<br />
<br />
When we boarded we were given group numbers and raffle tickets. While we were eating and setting sail the cast members of phantom who boarded the ship to set sail with us were introduced. Setting sail with some phans and some random rich people were Mary Michael Patterson (currently Christine on Broadway), Christian Sebek (currently Piangi on Broadway), Tim Jerome (currently Monsieur Firmin on Broadway), and Laird Mackintosh (currently Monsieur Andre on Broadway). Hugh Panaro wasn't there, I kind of figured he might not make it.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">our table</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The phantom of the opera music that I thought would be played for 2 hours straight only played for a total of maybe one hour during boarding and during certain parts of the cruise. For the rest of the cruise they played random music. The cruise consisted of half rich people enjoying some time on a yacht and half mediocre and hardcore phans. During the cruise they gave away a few raffle prizes and hosted 6 different group sessions where you could meet the cast members on board. When it came time for my group to go up I stole one of the posters off the ship (they were being taken anyway), ripped off the tape from the back of it and shoved the tape in my camera bag, and pretended I had this poster all along for the cast to autograph. I got my signatures and a photo with Christian Sebek and Mary Michael Patterson. When the ship was docked and we were waiting to get off Shawn and I actually chatted fora few minutes with Christian Sebek. Shawn predicted he'd be a pretty awesome dude to chill out with for a few minutes and his assumption was correct. Once the ship docked and we were back on land we got complimentary magnets.<br />

<br />
Overall it wasn't a bad cruise for the price. Even though they didn't play all phantom music for the 2 hours I still got to cruise on a yacht, drink a glass of champagne with my husband, meet and mingle with a few cast members and obtain an autographed poster that could out value the price of two of the two boarding passes we paid for. <br />
On August 24, 2013 @ 2 PM I saw Phantom of the Opera on Broadway for my 50th time. Peter Joback was the phantom (it was his second to last performance in the role before leaving Broadway), Marni Raab was Christine and Kyle Barisich was Raoul.<br />
<br />
I've reviewed other performances since I began writing and publishing my phantom blog but honestly I'm not the best judge of acting. That's probably why I didn't succeed when I took one year of drama during my first year of college. I'm just noting this because people might disagree with my opinion and although I am a fan of phantom I'm not the best judge on an actor's singing or acting ability. Also everyone has their own opinions some people love certain actors but hate other ones. That said let's move on to a few thoughts about the show.<br />
<br />
Peter Joback has been quite the controversy on Broadway when he took the role. Some phans loved him, others weren't so impressed with him when he came on the phantom scene. I think his voice was a little too high pitched for phantom he sounded more like a cartoon character not the legendary singer that the phantom is supposed to be. His acting was okay and I wouldn't say he was an awful phantom, overall he was decent.<br />
<br />
I have seen Maarni Raab and Kyle Barisich before so I don't really have any new thoughts about them.<br />
<br />
I was very impressed with Ellen Harvey as Mme. Giry. I'm not sure if I've seen her before but she pulled off the role of Mme. Giry very nicely in my opinion. She was powerful when she needed to be, slightly frightened and formidable when she needed to be.<br />
<br />
I also really dug Carlotta's Masquerade costume. I never paid attention to it before because I'm always too busy oogling Christine's star princess costume. <br />
<br />
Those are my few and random thoughts on performance #50, maybe this year I'll be lucky enough to get to see performance #51, we'll see.<br />
<br />
Now for some semi-sad news. I'm retiring my sexy phantom feature. I might bring it back in the future but I missed the posting for August and I've been finding myself grasping at which phantoms to chose for each month. I feel for the time being it makes sense to retire this feature.<br />
<br />
That's it for this terribly written blog entry might I bring you something more entertaining in the future! <br />

<br />
It's definitely been a long time since I reviewed something phantom based for this blog besides the show. I finally got around to tackling one of my many phantom books sitting at home waiting to be read, or re-read for a review. Carrie Hernandez, creator of POTO magazine, wrote and published this book. I loved POTO magazine! She writes four tales based on phantom of the opera including one I remember reading from POTO magazine. Personally I feel like two tales in this story Little Lotte and The Portal tie in very nicely together. It almost feels like those two tales could be part of a trilogy with a different story written to fit into the middle tale of a possible trilogy. This is some phan phiction worth getting your hands on IMO.Diana Brewsterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04438682392631832652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2446625229517785127.post-75416854684668331332013-07-23T11:34:00.002-07:002013-07-23T11:34:49.547-07:00Sexy Phantom July 2013 <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Okay, so they aren't really all that sexy after they die...unless you're into some weird s*it, but we can still dream about them if we want to!<br />

<br />
This month's Sexy Phantom is Steve Barton. He's more famous for playing Raoul but he did play the phantom as well. He actually died quite a few years ago back in 2001.<br />

<br />
Being that the end of May is a month to memorialize veterans here in the United States, I decided it was appropriate to memorialize a phantom who recently passed away. This month's sexy <span style="text-align: center;">Phantom is Kevin Gray. </span><br />

In efforts to spice up Sexy Phantom now in it's 3rd year I'm trying to do themes this year when presenting the Sexy Phantoms. So for March 2013, released on St. Patrick's Day I give you Thomas James O'Leary a nice Irish Phantom!<br />

<br />
<br />
Here he is ladies and gents! The sexy Phantom for February 2013 and also for Valentine's Day! Cris Groenendaal, one of the Broadway Phantoms! Personally I think he's much more drool worthy with the mask on so maybe my graphically enhanced Valentine's Day Photo will make up for not wanting to hop into bed with him after seeing his unmasked playbill photo. Maybe some of you will find him appealing and sexy for this holiday.<br />
